How to tame a wild beard on a daily basis
Partager
A beard that goes every which way when you wake up is not necessarily a poorly maintained beard. Often, it simply lacks hydration, direction, and a little regularity. To know how to tame a rebellious beard, you must treat the hair, but also the skin underneath. This is what makes the difference between a stiff, coarse or puffy beard, and a soft beard that keeps a beautiful shape all day long.
An effective routine does not require a bathroom full of products. A few well-executed steps, a suitable oil, and, if your beard needs hold, a balm are usually enough.
Why does your beard become rebellious?
Every beard has its nature. Some hairs grow straight, others wave, cross, or go sideways. The drier the hair, the more it tends to curl and resist the comb. The problem often worsens after a hot shower, in cold weather, or when the beard is washed too often with an overly harsh soap.
Length also plays a role. A short beard may seem more difficult to control because the hairs do not yet have enough weight to fall naturally. Conversely, a long beard can swell if it is not detangled and nourished. In both cases, cutting a few stray hairs does not solve everything. You must first restore flexibility to the whole.
Finally, do not neglect the direction of growth. Forcing all hairs in a direction that does not suit them often gives an artificial and temporary result. The goal is rather to guide the beard towards a neat shape, adapted to your face and its natural implantation.
How to tame a rebellious beard with the right gestures
The best time to work on your beard is when it is clean and slightly damp, never soaking wet. After showering, pat it dry with a soft towel. Rubbing vigorously creates frizz, breaks the most fragile hairs, and can irritate the skin.
Then apply 3 to 5 drops of beard oil into the palm of your hand. A short beard will need less product than a dense or long beard. Warm the oil between your hands, then first massage the skin under the beard with your fingertips. Move from the roots to the tips so that each area is nourished.
This massage is essential. It helps to limit the feeling of tightness, itching, and small beard dandruff, while making the hair softer. When the hairs receive what they need, they fall into place more easily and require less effort in front of the mirror.
After the oil, run a comb or brush through your beard. Start gently from the tips if it is long or tangled, then gradually move up. This method avoids pulling on knots. Then comb in the main direction of growth, without aiming for rigid perfection. A well-groomed beard retains movement, but its outline remains controlled.
Oil or balm: which to choose?
Oil is the basic care for a rebellious, dry, or coarse beard. It nourishes the hair and skin, provides softness and gives a more polished look without weighing it down, provided it is well-dosed. It is particularly suitable in the morning after showering, or in the evening when the skin feels tight.
Balm is used when your beard needs extra hold. Its richer texture helps to structure hairs that spread out on the cheeks, chin, or mustache. It is very useful for medium to long beards, or for men whose hair is naturally thick and curly.
You can use both, but without excess. Oil provides care, balm provides hold. Apply the oil first, let it penetrate for a minute or two, then take a small amount of balm. Melt it between your hands before distributing it over the lengths and giving your beard its final shape.
If your beard looks greasy or heavy, it's not necessarily the product that's unsuitable: you might be using too much. Reduce the quantity for a few days. With Mateus Company products, as with any quality beard care product, the right dosage is as important as regularity.
The styling that really changes the shape
The comb is ideal for detangling and creating a natural parting in a short or medium beard. A beard brush is particularly useful if your beard is dense, as it distributes the oil better and helps the hairs to fall in the same direction. There is no need to brush for a long time: one to two minutes daily, with regular movements, already give good results.
For areas that lift, use the palm of your hand after brushing. Lightly press the hairs downwards and hold for a few seconds. This simple pressure, repeated daily, gradually accustoms your beard to follow the desired shape.
The hairdryer can help, but it requires caution. Use a low or lukewarm temperature, keep the appliance at a distance, and direct the air in the direction of styling. Too much heat dries out the hair and negates the benefits of your oil. If you use a hairdryer, finish with a touch of cool air to set the shape without damaging the beard.
Mistakes that perpetuate an unruly beard
The first mistake is to wash your beard every day with a classic shower gel. It can give an immediate impression of cleanliness, but often removes the natural oils beneficial to the skin and hair. Prefer a gentle cleansing and adjust its frequency to your daily life, your skin, and your activities.
The second mistake is to trim a dry and unstyled beard. Rebellious hairs appear longer than they actually are. Hydrate, brush, then observe the beard from several angles before cutting only the stray tips. Too aggressive a trim can create visual gaps and make regrowth even more difficult to style.
Also, avoid using too many strong styling products. They can stiffen the beard, but they do not replace care. A beard that is hard to the touch is not necessarily a disciplined beard. Instead, look for a flexible hold, comfortable to wear, and easy to readjust with your fingers throughout the day.
A simple routine morning and night
In the morning, lightly dampen the beard if necessary, apply a few drops of oil, massage, then comb in the desired direction. Add a little balm only if certain areas need to be held in place. This routine takes a few minutes and avoids having to correct your beard several times during the day.
In the evening, remove accumulated residue during the day with a gentle cleanse if needed. On clean skin, apply a small amount of oil and massage calmly. Night is a good time to let the treatment work without trying to create a perfect shape.
A rebellious beard does not transform in one day, especially if it is very dry or grows in multiple directions. After one to two weeks of regular care, the hairs generally become softer, easier to guide, and more pleasant to the touch. Keep up the rhythm, adapt the dosage to your length, and let your beard find a shape that suits you.
